Pinon Hills Elementary School's Family Reading Night was a huge success!
At the start of the year, PHES Reading Specialist, Valerie Wilkinson initiated a book club for our K-3 teachers. Inspired by the shared wealth of knowledge, she envisioned extending the learning experience to our parents. PHES Principal Mr. Reid suggested a family engagement night, leading to a memorable event.
Thanks to the funds raised at their annual Book Fair, Ms. Wilkinson curated an evening of delightful dinner prepared by the custodial staff and engaging books for our K-3 families. The goal was clear - empower parents with insights to support their children's success.
After the community-style dinner, parents gathered in their student's classrooms, where they were taught level-appropriate reading techniques. Later, the students joined their parents, allowing them to put into practice what they had just learned.
Ms. Wilkinson highlighted the crucial role of strong listening comprehension for proficient reading. She expressed, "We wanted to remind parents about the significance of reading to our children, fostering conversations about what we read, and simply engaging in meaningful dialogues. I couldn't have organized the event without our amazing teachers, Mr. Reid, and the incredible kitchen and custodial staff!
I feel like the whole night can be summed up with this one quote, "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." - Helen Keller
